History - In the beginning..
Running for our first eight years
on little more than commitment, we provided basic recording and
rehearsal facilities for local bands, organised gigs for many social
causes and actively campaigned for public investment into music
at the grass roots level. Our argument has always been that, although
some of the most outstanding cultural achievements in post war Britain
have come from rock and pop musicians in working class regions,
they lack the basic facilities and receive the least support in
their struggle to establish themselves.
Over the years, our ideas gained
support and, in 1988, we had a breakthrough when we secured backing
from Durham County Council and the Department of Education and Science
to run the pioneering Making Music Work programme. We set up Northern
Recording as a company and raised the necessary finance to install
industry standard recording, rehearsal and performance studios.
Since then, we have been swamped
by demand, providing recording facilities, rehearsal space, coaching
and advice to schools, young musicians and working bands. In the
process, the studios have become a natural focus for some of the
most interesting and exciting bands in the North East today.
